CAES Boston Scientific Innovation Award for BARS® study by Dr. Armin Kuellmer

PD Dr. Armin Küllmer has received the Boston Scientific Innovation Award from CAES 2025 for his study “REDUCE – Reduction of gastrojejunal anastomosis with a novel clip system for the treatment of dumping syndrome after gastric bypass.” This award recognizes the innovative study in which BARS® was used to reduce anastomosis in patients with dumping syndrome.

Dumping syndrome is a common complication after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, in which the rapid passage of food into the small intestine through an enlarged gastrojejunal anastomosis plays a decisive role. In a prospective multicenter study, the effect of BARS® on reducing the gastrojejunal anastomosis diameter was investigated. The anastomoses of 23 patients with dumping syndrome after RYGB were treated with BARS® in three German centers. The diameter of the anastomosis was reduced by an average of 77%, and the patients’ Sigstad scores improved significantly. In 50% of patients, early dumping was significantly reduced after 12 weeks, and in 18% of patients, late dumping was significantly reduced. A positive side effect was a significant reduction in the patients’ BMI.

With BARS®, Ovesco Endoscopy is committed to advanced medical technologies that improve patient care and offer new treatment options. This recognition by the CAES Innovation Award underscores the importance of our work in medical research and development.
