Ovesco invests in metabolic-bariatric endoscopy with Trans-Duodenal Concepts

Tübingen and Mannheim, August 26, 2025. Ovesco Endoscopy AG, based in Tübingen, is investing nearly €1 million in Trans-Duodenal Concepts GmbH, Mannheim, to jointly advance innovative solutions in the field of metabolic-bariatric endoscopy.

Around one billion people worldwide are affected by metabolic syndrome and its manifestations, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease. The Mannheim-based start-up Trans-Duodenal Concepts GmbH (TDC) is developing an innovative implant that can be inserted via gastroscopy and lines the duodenum and parts of the small intestine with a plastic tube. The aim is to prevent the absorption of nutrients in the upper small intestine in order to support weight loss and improve blood sugar management in diabetes patients. The implant combines successful principles of obesity surgery with reversible and non-invasive endoscopic procedures, thereby addressing the global challenge posed by metabolic diseases. It has already been tested in preclinical trials and is based on a proven therapeutic concept. TDC is a technological leader thanks to its innovative implantation method.

Ovesco already has a product in its portfolio, BARS®, which is used to treat complications following bariatric surgery. With an investment of approximately €1 million, Ovesco is acquiring a stake in TDC and distribution rights for the future product in various regions, thus taking the next step in jointly developing the field of metabolic endoscopy.

TDC is a start-up associated with Heidelberg University and was founded by Prof. Georg Kähler, MD, an internationally recognized endoscopist and long-time head of interdisciplinary endoscopy at Mannheim University Hospital. With its innovative implant, the company aims to provide patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome a minimally invasive and reversible treatment option. The procedure is now being evaluated in a multicenter study.
