Dr Edris Wedi honored for his research on hemostasis with the OTSC Clip

Dr Wedi received the DGVS endoscopy research award for the FLETRock study, a multi-centric study with OTSC® as first-line-therapy for upper GI bleeding. The study confirms the superiority of OTSC vs. standard therapy (Re-bleeding rate significantly lower in comparison to the Rockall Score’s predicted value: 4.9 vs 24.0 % in the middle-risk group and 21.4 vs 53.2 % in the high-risk group; p < 0.001).

Dr Edris Wedi, Department for Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Oncology, University Hospital Göttingen, Germany was honored with the endoscopy research award by the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) at the Viszeralmedizin 2018 in Munich. The endoscopy research award is granted for exceptional achievements in the field of fundamental and clinical research in endoscopy.
Dr Wedi received this award for his scientific work “Multicenter evaluation of first-line endoscopic treatment with the Over-The-Scope-Clip (OTSC) in acute non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding – the FLETRock study”.

In this study all patients received an OTSC for first-line-therapy (ETO cohort). For comparison the predicted outcome according to the validated Rockall score was used. Treatment with the OTSC significantly reduced the re-bleeding rate in the middle- and high-risk group in comparison to the Rockall Score (4.9 vs 24.0 % in the middle-risk group and 21.4 vs 53.2 % in the high-risk group; p < 0.001). Also the mortality after re-bleeding was reduced by OTSC therapy (1.7 vs 7.3 % in the middle-risk and 10.9 vs 27.9 % in the high-risk group; p = 0.121 and 0.011, respectively).

The study shows, that OTSC is superior to standard care and first-line treatment with OTSC in hemorrhage reduces significantly rebleeding and rebleeding-associated mortality in non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The authors conclude that “OTSC could be the treatment of choice as the first-line treatment as an alternative to standard hemostasis techniques in high-risk patients”.
